Among its many hidden gems lies the Dhauladhar Range, a majestic chain of mountains that plays host to numerous enchanting treks. One such trek, revered for its spiritual significance and raw natural beauty, is the Lam Dal Lake trek.

This high-altitude adventure takes you through rugged terrains to the sacred abode of seven pristine lakes, each holding a unique charm and legend.

Our story begins in the quaint village of Kareri, nestled at the foothills of the Dhauladhars. Twelve friends, all dedicated government employees seeking respite from their routine, embarked on this memorable journey in June 2025. Our group comprised Ishant Rai, Sushil, Ashwani, Pradhan, Deepak, Jaggi, Khatri, Pali, Vinay, Rakesh, Himanshu, and Ankit – a motley crew united by our camaraderie and a shared thirst for adventure. Little did we know that this trek would not only test our physical endurance but also deepen our bonds of friendship and fill our hearts with awe.

The Ascent Begins: Kareri Village to Kareri Lake (Day 1 Lam Dal Lake Trek)

Our adventure commenced at 10:00 in the morning from Kareri village. The initial trail leading to Kareri Lake is a well-trodden path, popular among weekend trekkers. The air was crisp and carried the scent of pine as we wound our way through dense forests. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, illuminating the vibrant green undergrowth. The gentle murmur of mountain streams accompanied our ascent, creating a soothing symphony.

The trek to Kareri Lake is approximately 13 kilometers and generally takes around 4-5 hours, gaining a significant altitude. The terrain gradually transitioned from easy trails to rocky paths, providing glimpses of the stunning valleys below. Our excitement grew with every step as we anticipated reaching the glacial lake known for its breathtaking beauty.

Around 4:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon, we finally arrived at Kareri Lake (approximately 2,950 meters above sea level). The sight that greeted us was nothing short of magical. The emerald green waters of the lake reflected the towering snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhars, creating a picture-perfect scene. A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Shakti stood overlooking the lake, adding a touch of serenity to the surroundings.

We quickly set up our tents near the lake, the cool mountain air invigorating our tired bodies. As dusk descended, the stars began to pepper the inky sky, their brilliance amplified by the high altitude and the absence of city lights. We huddled around a crackling bonfire, sharing stories and laughter, the warmth of the flames mirroring the warmth of our friendship.

A Sacred Bath and the Journey Towards Lam Dal Lake (Day 2 Lam Dal Lake Trek)

The next morning, we woke up to the golden hues of sunrise painting the snow-clad peaks. True to our plans, we all took a dip in the icy cold waters of Kareri Lake. The initial shock of the cold quickly gave way to a sense of exhilaration and purification. It was a shared moment of joy and camaraderie, our laughter echoing across the tranquil lake.

After our invigorating bath and offering prayers at the lakeside temple, our focus shifted to our ultimate destination: Lam Dal Lake. We started our trek around 11:00 AM, knowing that this leg of the journey would be more challenging and less frequented. The air distance between Kareri Lake and Lam Dal is around 3 kilometers, but the actual trekking distance is considerably more due to the rugged terrain and varying altitudes.

Our initial path involved navigating through meadows and then gradually ascending towards higher altitudes. As we gained elevation, the landscape started to transform. The lush greenery gave way to more barren and rocky terrain. The majestic views of the Dhauladhar range continued to inspire us, their grandeur a constant reminder of nature’s power.

Navigating Glaciers and Darkness: The Unforeseen Camp (Day 2 Continued to Lam Dal Lake Trek)

The trek from Kareri Lake to Lam Dal is known to take around 4-5 hours for experienced trekkers in favorable conditions. However, our journey proved to be more arduous. As we ventured further, we encountered numerous glaciers that we had to carefully cross. The icy surfaces were slippery, and the risk of falls was ever-present. We had to tread cautiously, helping each other and ensuring everyone’s safety.

As the day wore on, the sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the mountains. Despite our best efforts, we found ourselves still quite a distance away from Lam Dal as darkness enveloped the landscape. The terrain became even more challenging to navigate in the dim light. Realizing it was unsafe to continue in the dark, we decided to set up camp at a location approximately 2.5 to 3 hours behind what we jokingly referred to as “London” (our intended destination for the night, likely a specific landmark or reference point known to the group).

Pitching our tents in the fading light required teamwork and coordination. The temperature dropped significantly as night fell, making the warmth of our tents and the shared meal we prepared all the more comforting. We recounted the day’s adventures, the challenges we overcame, and the stunning beauty that surrounded us. The feeling of being isolated in the heart of the Himalayas, under a blanket of stars, was both humbling and exhilarating.

The Final Push: Reaching the Sacred Lam Dal Lake (Day 3 Lam Dal Lake Trek)

We woke up with the first light, the crisp mountain air filling our lungs. After a quick breakfast, we resumed our trek towards Lam Dal. We knew we were close, and the anticipation fueled our steps. The terrain continued to be challenging, with rocky ascents and occasional patches of snow.

Around 9:00 AM, we started what felt like the final leg of our food journey (likely a reference to the remaining distance to our main destination). The views became increasingly dramatic as we climbed higher. The snow-capped peaks seemed to loom larger, and the valleys stretched out below us like giant tapestries.

Finally, around 12:30 PM, we reached “London” (the point we aimed for the previous night). This marked a significant milestone in our trek, as we had almost crossed the “examination” – a playful way of describing the toughest part of the journey. The final stretch from “London” to Lam Dal was filled with a mix of excitement and relief.

Lam Dal: A Sanctuary of Ice and Faith (Day 3 Continued in Lam Dal Lake Trek)

Reaching Lam Dal (approximately 3,900 meters above sea level) was an emotional moment for all of us. The lake, true to its name, was largely frozen even in June. The pristine white expanse of ice against the backdrop of the rugged mountains created a surreal and awe-inspiring spectacle. This was our “London” – a metaphorical and perhaps literal endpoint of a significant part of our journey.

To celebrate our achievement and in keeping with the sacred nature of the lake, we indulged in a unique experience – taking a bath in the partially frozen waters. The icy chill was intense, but the feeling of accomplishment and spiritual cleansing was profound. We spent some time by the lake, soaking in the tranquility and marveling at the untouched beauty of our surroundings.

Adjacent to the lake, we found a small temple dedicated to Bholenath (Lord Shiva). We offered our prayers, expressing gratitude for a safe journey and seeking blessings. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of peace and reverence, a testament to the lake’s spiritual significance.

The Descent Begins: Towards Creed Pass (Day 3 Continued in Lam Dal Lake Trekking)

With our hearts full and spirits renewed, we began our return journey. After packing up our camp near Lam Dal and having some breakfast, we started our descent towards Creed Pass. It was around 6:00 PM when we crossed Bin Ke Aani Pass, another significant point on our route. The descent was challenging in its own way, requiring careful footing and constant vigilance.

As darkness fell once again, we found ourselves nearing Creed Pass. It was around 10:30 to 11:00 at night, and the fatigue from the day’s trek was starting to set in. Navigating the unfamiliar terrain in the dark was proving difficult. We decided to halt our journey and spend the night near Creed Pass, prioritizing safety over pushing through in exhaustion.

The Final Leg: Reaching Civilization (Day 4 Lam Dal Lake Trek)

The next morning, the sunrise painted the mountain peaks in vibrant hues, a welcome sight after a long and tiring night. We resumed our descent, the promise of reaching our vehicle spurring us on. The walk towards the car took approximately three to four hours. The terrain gradually eased as we descended, and the familiar signs of civilization became more apparent.

Finally, we reached our vehicle, marking the end of our incredible Lam Dal Lake trek. We were tired, our bodies ached, but our hearts were full of memories and a sense of accomplishment. We thanked Jai Shri Ram and Jai Bholenath for their blessings and the safe completion of our journey.

Essential Gear for the Lam Dal Lake Trek:

Based on our experience, here are some essential items you should carry for the Lam Dal Lake trek:

  • Tent: A sturdy and waterproof tent is crucial for comfortable and safe overnight stays in the mountains.
  • Sleeping Bag: A high-quality sleeping bag suitable for sub-zero temperatures is the most important piece of equipment for a trek at this altitude. It will ensure a warm and restful sleep.
  • Stove and Fuel: A portable stove and sufficient fuel are necessary for cooking meals during the trek.
  • Utensils: Carry essential utensils like a patili (cooking pot), cooker (small pressure cooker), plates, bowls, spoons, and mugs.
  • Raincoat: If you are trekking during or around the monsoon season (like we did in June, which proved challenging), a good quality raincoat is indispensable to stay dry and prevent hypothermia.
  • Warm Clothes: Pack layers of warm clothing, including thermal wear, fleece jackets, a windproof and waterproof outer jacket, and warm trousers.
  • Gloves and Hat: Protect your extremities from the cold with warm gloves and a woolen cap or beanie.
  • Trekking Shoes and Socks: Wear comfortable and sturdy trekking shoes with good ankle support. Carry extra pairs of warm socks.
  • Headlamp or Flashlight: Essential for navigating in the dark, especially if your trek extends into the night or early morning.
  • Water Bottles or Hydration Pack: Stay hydrated by carrying sufficient water and a reusable water bottle or hydration pack.
  • First-Aid Kit: A basic first-aid kit with essential medicines and supplies is crucial for dealing with minor injuries or ailments.
  • Sunscreen and Sunglasses: Protect your skin and eyes from the strong UV rays at high altitudes.
  • Snacks: Carry high-energy snacks like dry fruits, nuts, chocolates, and energy bars to keep you fueled during the trek.

Cost Considerations Lam Dal Lake Trekking:

Our group of 12 friends, with some joining from Shimla and others from Mandi, incurred a cost of approximately ₹2000 to ₹3000 per person for this trek. This cost primarily covered transportation to and from the base camp, food supplies, and shared equipment. The actual cost may vary depending on your mode of transport, the type of food you prefer, and whether you hire porters or guides.

The Best Time to Embark on the Lam Dal Lake Trek:

Based on our personal experience in June, which we found to be quite challenging due to the presence of snow and the absence of established trails (as the “goat people” – local shepherds who use these routes – hadn’t crossed yet), we strongly recommend undertaking the Lam Dal Lake trek between August and September. During this period, the weather is generally more stable, the trails are clearer, and the risk of encountering thick snow and glaciers is significantly reduced. Trekking after the shepherds have crossed with their flocks can also make navigation easier as they create temporary paths.

Why Lam Dal Lake Holds Spiritual Significance:

While our personal account focuses on the adventure and camaraderie, it’s crucial to understand the profound spiritual importance of Lam Dal Lake. It is considered one of the seven sacred lakes of the Dhauladhar Range, often associated with Lord Shiva. Legend has it that these lakes are the abodes of various deities and hold immense religious significance for the local people. Devotees often undertake pilgrimages to these lakes, especially during auspicious times, to seek blessings and spiritual purification. Taking a dip in the holy waters is considered a sacred ritual.

The Unique Charm of Trekking with Friends (and Fellow “Government Slackers”):

Our group comprised individuals from various government departments, and our shared profession added a unique layer to our experience. We often joked about our “slacker” status, a lighthearted way of acknowledging the need for breaks and rejuvenation from our demanding jobs. This trek served as the perfect escape, allowing us to disconnect from the pressures of work and reconnect with nature and each other. The bonds of friendship were strengthened as we faced challenges together, celebrated small victories, and shared moments of laughter and awe.

The Landscapes That Captivate:

The Lam Dal Lake trek is not just about the destination; it’s also about the journey through some of the most stunning landscapes Himachal Pradesh has to offer. From the lush green forests around Kareri village to the rugged, snow-dusted mountains near Lam Dal, every turn on the trail reveals a new vista of breathtaking beauty. The glaciers we crossed, though challenging, were also a sight to behold, showcasing the raw power of nature. The crystal-clear waters of Kareri Lake reflecting the surrounding peaks, and the serene, frozen expanse of Lam Dal, all left an indelible mark on our memories.

Unforgettable Journey of Friendship and Faith

The Lam Dal Lake trek was more than just a physical challenge for our group of twelve friends. It was a journey of discovery, both of the stunning natural beauty of the Himalayas and of the enduring strength of our friendship. We faced challenges, shared moments of joy and laughter, and experienced the profound peace and spirituality of the sacred lakes. Our adventure serves as a testament to the allure of the Dhauladhars and the magic that awaits those who venture into its majestic embrace. We highly recommend this trek to anyone seeking an unforgettable experience in the heart of Himachal Pradesh, keeping in mind the ideal time to visit for a smoother and more enjoyable journey. Jai Shri Ram! Jai Bholenath!
